ON-SONG Leeds Rhinos ace Kallum Watkins insists he has not changed the way he is going about things.

Watkins had a slow start to the season as Rhinos struggled to find their feet, but has been in explosive form during a run of six wins from the last seven matches.

He ran in four tries when Rhinos began their First Utility Qualifiers campaign with a 62-6 win at Featherstone Rovers last week and is aiming to continue that in tonight’s crunch home clash with Hull KR.

A win would boost Rhinos’ hopes of regaining their Super League place for next season and Watkins stressed he and the team are looking to build on the progress made over the last two months.

“I am happy with my form and it’s good to see the team playing well,” Watkins said.

“I think things have started to click a bit more.

“For me, I work hard, do my extras and do what I need to do.

“I didn’t have to change anything, just on the field as a team we needed to change a little bit in terms of our mentality to things and tighten up a bit in D [defence].

“With the ball we are being a bit smarter in what we do and I think that has helped us, we aren’t putting ourselves under as much pressure and that helps us to keep ourselves in game or keep ourselves ahead in games.”

Watkins added: “The Hull KR game last month was a huge example of that. We got ourselves back into it.

“We made it hard for ourselves at times, but that’s how we’ve been for most of the years when we’ve

been very successful.

“We need to keep that going because these next few weeks are going to be tough and we need to come out and get results.

“There’s a lot of hard work to do, but we need to do it.”

The return of key players from injury has also made a huge difference.

“The main thing for us is performing well, but also getting results,” Watkins said.

“We have been fortunate to get quite a few players back and that has given us a bit more experience.

“It is great to see everyone back and full credit to the lads who have worked hard and got the right results for us.

“There’s a lot of hard work to do still.

“It has been just one game in the middle-eights and we need to carry that on now.”

Hull KR have never lost in the middle-eights and are fresh from a 58-18 win over Batley Bulldogs last week.

Watkins said: “It is going to be a tough game for us and we need to get a good result. They played well last Sunday against Batley.

“They got a great result and that will give them huge confidence.

“They have been battered with quite a few injuries, but they have got a few players back now.

“It makes it a tough battle and it will be an exciting clash.”
