Leeds Rhinos suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 14-10 at Super League leaders St Helens last night.

Rhinos led 6-0 and 8-6 and looked to have done enough to secure a point when Kevin Sinfield kicked them level at 10-10 with 11 minutes left, but Tommy Makinson scored a dramatic winning try for Saints two minutes from time.

Rhinos coach Brian McDermott said: ”It was a fair result it was always going to be a tough game.

“I thought they played incredibly well. We will learn from it.”

To rub salt into Rhinos’ wounds they lost forward Jamie Jones-Buchanan who suffered a torn biceps in the first half and is facing a lay-off of several weeks.
