Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McDermott is hopeful Aussie forward Mitch Achurch’s eye injury is not long-term.

Achurch was substituted after being hurt in the first half of Rhinos’ Lazenby Cup win over Hunslet Hawks on Sunday and was unable to go back on.

He needed hospital treatment after the game and his eye is heavily bandaged.

Coach Brian McDermott said: “He got a scratch on his eyeball.

“It is painful at the moment, the scratch is right across the top of his pupil.

“I don’t think it is anything long-term, the doctor reckons it will settle down reasonably quickly, but he is going to have to have a couple of days off to let it do that.”

The injury was a blow to Achurch, who missed Rhinos’ Boxing Day clash with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats after damaging a knee in the warm-up.
