James Lowes: Leeds Rhinos hungry for more success
James Lowes.
If attitude is anything to go by, assistant coach James Lowes reckons champions Leeds Rhinos are in for a successful season.
Rhinos are back in this country following a week-long warm weather training camp in Cyprus and Lowes declared himself impresed with the “hunger” shown by the Super League kings.
Leeds have won four of the last five Grand Finals, including last year’s shock triumph from fifth spot in the final table, but Lowes insisted there is a strong feeling in the squad that more can still be achieved.
“There’s a great desire within any sport among athletes at the top of their game,” Lowes said. “Success breeds success, you want more.
“This bunch of lads are no different. The attitude I have seen from them has been outstanding.
“That’s throughout pre-season, not just on the camp. There’s a great desire to continue to be successful and to work as hard as possible and the camp just confirmed that for me.”
Rhinos spent the week at the Akrotiri RAF base and Lowes said: “The camp was very good, the RAF really looked after us and made us feel welcome.
“The players did everything we asked them to do. We trained twice per day and it was full-on for the time we were there.
“We had seven days and we made the most of it, we really cracked on and got some good sessions in.
“There was a lot of rain, but the weather was warm and that allows you to stand around and talk about things.
“It means you get more time on the field and you’re not in a rush to get in and get out of the cold.
“We have been able to spend more time on things and that should benefit us from the start of the year.”
The camp was the first time Rhinos’ full squad have got together this year and Lowes, pictured, added: “The new additions have settled in really well and there are some kids pushing through.
“Having hung around with seasoned professionals for a week has been fantastic for them. The attitude rubs off on them and they have really knuckled down.
“I am looking forward to seeing one or two – and maybe more – of them getting an opportunity this year.”
Rhinos will field an under-20s line-up in a game at Co-op Championship outfit York City Knights on Sunday.
