Hunslet’s stay in the Kingstone Press Championship is over – just one season after winning promotion.
The Hawks were in need of a victory against their West Yorkshire rivals to stand any hope of taking the relegation fight into the final weekend, but in an extremely scrappy affair, they came out second best, going down 18-10 at the South Leeds Stadium.
The Friday night kick-off seemed to affect both sides with very few sets reaching the fifth tackle, although Featherstone would have opened the scoring through Kyran Johnson had it not been for a stunning Mo Agoro tackle.
They were in front just minutes before half time when Andy Ellis took advantage of some soft defending close to the Hunslet line.
Sykes then doubled his side’s advantage five minutes after the interval when he supported a Johnson break down the right hand side. Barry Eaton’s Hunslet did give themselves a glimmer of hope when Danny Maun took advantage of a smart James Houston offload but that hope was dashed when Blackmore intercepted a loose pass while the home side were pushing for the equaliser. Flanagan then crossed on the final whistle.
