IF Sunday’s second pre-season game exposes all Batley Bulldogs’ failings, coach John Kear will be a happy man.

Bulldogs host Keighley Cougars exactly three weeks before the teams meet again in the Co-op Championship’s opening round.

Batley began their pre-season programme with an impressive 28-18 win over Dewsbury Rams on Boxing Day and Kear said: “I was very happy with that.

“Some individuals showed good touches and we showed some good work as a team, but we also showed some deficiencies.

“We have worked on those and that is what you want in pre-season – you want your deficiencies to be shown up before the competitive fixtures start.”

Kear has no qualms about facing Keighley so soon before their league clash.

Factored

“We’ve factored it into our preparations,” he added.

“We couldn’t change opponents, because everyone else has made other arrangements.

“We will have different objectives to what Keighley have, so I don’t think it matters.”

Of the way preparations are going, Kear added: “It has been very good, we are looking really sharp.

“I am reasonably happy with our organisation, there are areas where we need to be better than on Boxing Day, but we’ll be looking to make those improvements this week.”

Paul Mennell (hand) and Craig Potter (hamstring) won’t be risked tomorrow and Danny Maun and Gareth Moore are on Bulldogs’ long-term casualty list.

Batley Bulldogs (v Keighley): from Potts, Campbell, Walton, Faal, Bretherton, Johnson, Black, Hemingway, Hirst, Smith, Rowe, Leary, Whitmore, Flanagan, Esders, Scott, Applegarth, Walmsley, Lindsay.

Referee: Ron Laughton (Barnsley).
