Owls accept footballing challenge

Oakwood Owls have accepted an invitation to play in the under 15's Premiership League held at Soccer City on Friday evenings.

The Owls will be playing in familiar surroundings having taken part in seven tournaments at the venue over the past six months, winning one and ending as runners up on five occasions.

Rod Christopher, of Oakwood Owls, said: "The guys all look forward to testing themselves against proper opposition & this opportunity is just what we need right now. We've been together for almost three years, but have had to settle for away tournaments & local football youth group visits in order to get regular challenges at our base.

"This changes the whole groups long term direction & plans, but in a very positive way. We can now compare ourselves against organised sides & junior club players every week, which can only be a good thing for player development."

Mr Christopher said "We start this campaign with a 15 point deficit, due to joining up after the league began in July, but we will use this first season as a platform to build on.

He added: "Just to stay up would be a great achievement in itself & our first match is against the current champions, present league leaders & the very same team that defeated us in the youth service under 15s cup final there in late July. I dont think we could have had a more difficult baptism, but we will be ready."

Oakwood Owls kick off against Leeds United Youth at Soccer City on Friday, August 17. (5.30pm kick off)
