Rick lifts Otley to Kall-Kwik crown

A TEAM which escaped relegation to second-tier squash last season has bounced back to win the Kall-Kwik Squash League first division title.

Otley only escaped the drop last season because a team in Division Two decided they were not good enough for promotion.

And that opened the door for Otley's march on the title.

But there was one other telling factor in the club's rise to league championship glory.

That was the arrival of Rick Saunders who moved house to Bramhope and switched clubs from Collingham to Otley.

Once Otley skipper Matt Wood discovered that Saunders had moved closer to Otley he signed up the player.

"That signing helped to transform our team," said Wood.

Otley ensured a fitting finale to the season when they beat Adel 3-0, picking up a maximum 12 points.

Otley's rivals. Chapel Allerton, took just six points from their match against Harrogate, so paving the way for an Otley title triumph which had been on the cards since the season started.

In addition to Saunders, Wood and Paul Roberts, Otley have been given more than a helping hand by appearances from Rob Worley and Phil Maunsell.

Match details: Otley 3 Adel 0. (Otley names first):Rick Saunders beat Mark Ambler 9-0 9-4 9-6; Matt Wood beat Steve Glynn 10-9 9-4 9-5; Paul Roberts beat Jonty Hawkes 9-3 9-4 9-5.

Current Division One table (top two): Otley played 19, won 16, lost three 192 points; Chapel Allerton played 19, won 14, lost five, 180 points.

Meanwhile, Harlow have won the North Yorkshire League Championship, their numbers including Richard Leonard, Seth King, Jonathan Round, Simon Evans, Steve Thackwray and non-playing captain Rob Cunningham.
