Success is oh so Sweet

It was third time lucky for Nigel Sweet as he claimed the Yorkshire Amateur championship at Pannal.

The Moortown man overcame 2004 champion David Appleyard, from South Leeds, by 4&3 in a fascinating battle between a pair who hold full-time jobs while many leading amateurs are full-time players.

Sweet, manager of a Leeds golf shop, celebrated bouncing back 12 months on from suffering one of the heaviest defeats the Yorkshire final has witnessed, a 10&8 margin at the hands of an inspired Richard Law (Low Laithes) after his other appearance in the decider, in 2001, had ended 5&4 in favour of Hull's Richard Finch, who has since become a European Tour winner.
