Mason closes in on Open
James Mason starred in the Open Championship regional qualifier at Alwoodley yesterday, firing a five under par 67 that represents a professional record for the altered course.
It gives the Rotherham man a return to the final qualifying in Scotland on July 6-7.
There Mason will joined by fellow Yorkshire players Duncan McCarthy (Moortown) and Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall) who both finished four back from the PGA Europro Tour player.
They shot the same mark as two Scots, Kenny Hutton, from Downfield, Dundee, and St Andrews amateur Peter Latimer whose grandmother lives in Harrogate.
Seven players played off for the last five qualifying spots, four of them going to Yorkshiremen – Alwoodley professional John Green, Boothferry's Greg Tucker, Huddersfield-born Dan Greenwood, based in Lincolnshire, and Richard Golding, a former City of Wakefield assistant now based in Germany.
