Harrogate comeback leaves rivals stunned

HARROGATE stunned Halifax-Huddersfield by turning their Yorkshire Inter-Union League match at Starbeck on its head.

Only one side was in it in the morning foursomes, Halifax-Huddersfield speeding to a 9-3 lead.

No-one could have foreseen the amazing about-turn that gave Harrogate a 24-12 verdict.

And they achieved it without several top order men, all from Oakdale, who were committed to a major club event.

The match turned Harrogate's way early on in the singles, Steve Whitwham setting the mood for a great run of winning points from the first seven matches.

That 9-3 deficit swung into a winning position at 17-9 and three further wins at the tail-end confirmed a remarkable revival as only one win was chalked up by the visitors.

Sheffield wrecked Leeds' title hopes, easing in 25-11 at Horsforth where the champions won four and shared one of the foursomes, the exception being the top match in which Richard Law and Andy Wiltshire exchanged 11 birdies with talented youngsters James Maw and David Booth.

Law clinched it with a 20-foot birdie putt on the last.

The singles then proved an uphill battle for Leeds and Sheffield demonstrated their strength in depth, taking seven of the 12 matches.

Bradford proved a different class to Teesside who managed to share the foursomes then crashed in the singles to go down 23-13.

Gareth Evans set the Bradford ball rolling with a comfortable march through the top match though it was at the tail-end that Bradford's strength told.

A battling singles win by Walker Cup squad member Steve Uzzell, who birdied his last four holes after trailing two-down, was not enough for East Riding to stave off defeat by York who grabbed the last singles points to win 19-17 at Cottingham.
