Crick lands Harrogate spoils

WAYNE Crick entered the Harrogate Union stroke-play championship at Ilkley "not expecting to win, just to try and reduce my handicap."

But the Oakdale player stormed home in 69 after a first round 72 to land the Ogden Trophy by finishing a stroke ahead of host club players Mark Buckley and Jack Lampkin.

Defending champion Neil Fegan tied fourth with Steve Whitwham after Oakdale's Tom Hesketh fell back into the pack with a 77 after setting the pace on 67.

Ben Sardo, 14, a seven-handicapper from Otley, headed the field halfway through the second round with 73 71 and went on to win the best net prize.

Crick's win sent him clear in the player of the year table, on 155 points, with Lampkin second on 120.

Leading scores:141 – W Crick (Oakdale) 72 69. 142 – J Lampkin (Ilkley) 74 68, M Buckley (Ilkley) 68 74. 143 – N Fegan (Harrogate) 73 70, S Whitwham (Harrogate) 69 74.

Meanwhile, Adam Davison, from Waterton Park, Wakefield, powered his way to a four under par 69 at Swinton to book a place in the Powerade PGA Assistants' championship at the London Club in August.

Davison, 26, tied second in a field of 83 in the North Region qualifying round.

A keen footballer, he looked like scoring a flawless round with five birdies but dropped his only shot at the 494-yard last.

Eight other Yorkshire players qualified, among them 2007 champion Jon Lupton on 70 and Wike Ridge's Joe Feather on 74 while Pannal's James Carter won through a play-off for the last two spots.
