Gymnastics: Pudsey star Nile Wilson picked for '˜important' Rio '˜warm-up'

PUDSEY's Nile Wilson has been named in the Great Britain team that will take part in the European Championships in Bern, Switzerland next week.

The event features a strong line-up of British gymnasts aiming to be amongst the medals in the last major championships before the Rio Olympic Games.

Selected alongside Wilson in the senior men’s team are: pommel World Champion Max Whitlock and World Championships team silver medal winners Dan Purvis, Louis Smith MBE and Kristian Thomas.

The senior women’s team comprises: 2014 European bars champion Becky Downie with fellow World Championship team bronze medallists Ellie Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold and 2014 European team silver medallist Rebecca Tunney.

At last year’s European Championships Great Britain’s senior gymnasts scooped a record six apparatus medals.

Great Britain’s men’s head national coach, Eddie Van Hoof said: “This is an important championships, particularly with Rio just eight weeks after, and a good opportunity to try some tactical options.

“We have a strong team with a good balance of experience and youth who are all highly motivated as they step up preparations for the Olympics.

“For the juniors the expectation is to try and continue our successful run and they are working very hard to follow in the footsteps of the senior gymnasts.”
