Oakwood Owls return to footballing action

Oakwood Owls are set to return to match action as they compete in a mini league five-a-side tournament close to Elland Road stadium during the school holidays.

The boys will be involved in the annual spring five's competition at Soccer City, on Wednesday, February 13 between 1-3pm & hope to take a strong squad of 7 under 17 players from the group.

The tournament will be run on a round robin basis, with a six team league competing against each other in five minute matches. The top four teams will then go through to the semi-final stage.

Rod Christopher, Oakwood Owls manager, said: ''We've been working towards the event for the past few weeks now, trying out a number of different players, but as the day nears we will again aim to enjoy the experience and find out how far we have come as a youth group football education set up. Obviously it would be nice to reach the latter stages, but the whole experience of learning together is far more important to me as the coach.

"We will be up against a lot of boys aged 17, but our squad are mostly U-15s, so we expect some very physical encounters & my main concern is that we may get overpowered on the field by the older lads that take part. Our team ethics are not in question at all.

"We're a very capable bunch and are well organised, but sometimes experience & physical strength can easily overcome raw enthusiasm. I'm sure that all of our squad will give their all though & thats all i expect of them on the day. To reach the semi final stage would be a great bonus for us though, as anything is possible from there on!''

Soccer City squad: Rawson, Kinghorn, Coldwell, Mullaney, Ovari, Griffin & Worsley.
