Northern Rail Cup match report: Oldham v Featherstone Rovers

Featherstone Rovers roared to a comprehensive 68-0 victory at Oldham in the group stages of the Northern Rail Cup.

Fev got off to a flying start when Tangi Ropati crashed over in the corner down the right following good support work from Andy Kain and Ben Kaye. Fev increased their advantage with 17 minutes on the clock. Rampaging Liam Finn sold Valu Bentley a classic dummy and burst through down the right channel before adding the extras himself.

And 10 minutes later Johnny Grayson touched down to make it 14-0, this time Fev found joy on the left after Neil Roden had dropped the ball.

Andy Kain capped a fine team move with a try two minutes after the restart, Finn easily adding the extras.

There was more frustration for Oldham when Michael Ward’s touchdown was disallowed for a forward pass from Whitmore. To rub salt in the wound, Grayson weaved his way through and crossed, and Finn did the honours with the kick 10 minutes into the second period, and almost immediately Ian Hardman followed suit, with Finn converting.

Greg Worthington made it look easy when he found a gap down the left. Finn’s kick took the score to 38-0.

Just after the hour mark Kain evaded four would-be tackles to give his side another four points, and Finn again successfully kicked.

Finn also converted Tommy Saxton’s rampaging try through the centre. With 10 minutes left Saxton turned provider, feeding Finn who beat the chasers and goaled.

Finn twice repeated the pattern before time ran out, first latching on to Worthington’s clever kick and then, shortly afterwards, jinking his way over the line.

Ref: J Leahy (Dewsbury).

Attendance: 672.
