North Leeds CC hold out for opening day draw
On possibly the coldest day in the history of cricket, North Leeds 1st X1 travelled to Guiseley for the opening fixture of season 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the wicket was damp but the home skipper chose to bat and North Leeds took the field wrapped up against the elements.
Nick Richardson took the valuable wicket of Mark Ross, and North Leeds
seemed to be in the driving seat for much of the 1st innings but could not remove Guiseley's overseas signing, Dean Russ, who went on to make an impressive unbeaten century on debut.

North Leeds new skipper, Tim Cooper, adopted primarily a seam based bowling attack and he would have been disappointed to not restrict the opposition to 30 runs fewer than there final total of 181. Steve Wales, Nick Richardson and Tom Atkinson all bowled well but without overseas signing, Greg Kennedy, who was playing for the 2nd team due to a minor calf injury, the attack lacked the cutting edge to open up the tail.
Tim Jackson, now a student in Manchester and veteran opener, James Goldthorpe made a steady start in reply, with Goldthorpe making a useful 26. Martin Kellaway and Farhan Khan, returning to the North following a spell in the Bradford League, both achieved double figures but neither were able to continue supporting the youngster, Jackson, as he gently increased his scoring wait to rack up an impressive 67 runs.
Tom Atkinson and Steve Spiegelman, a new signing who recently moved to the area from Scotland and an ECB development officer, failed to make double figures and North Leeds were always behind the run rate.
With the wicket becoming more difficult to score on and the light diminishing, North Leeds tried in vain to push for victory, Nick Richardson and Barry Singleton, to kick and block out for the draw.
Guiseley 4 points North Leeds 2 points
Better luck next week when North Leeds welcomes Pool CC to the Homestead and we all hope for better weather.
