North East Leeds U-11s battle bravely in cup defeat

North East Leeds U-11s put up a spirited performance in the cup at the weekend.

Menston Juniors U-11s 5

North East Leeds U-11s 2

Date: Sunday, November 25

Competition: Garforth Junior League Challenge Cup Round 3

Despite this cup defeat we were really pleased with the effort and commitment shown by all the players.

Menston are a very good side with not only good individuals but a good team spirit and play good football. In the second half particularly we matched them and battled to get back into the game but it wasn't to be.

We went 1-0 down after only four minutes after an excellent one touch passing move resulted in a one-on-one sutiuation which they took advantage of. However we kept battling and on 19 minutes scored the equaliser after some good dribbling and a through ball which Josh Baggott got on the end of and calmly slotted home.

However, the lapses in concentration we often displayed in our previous game at Woodkirk were to be seen again and two minutes later we were 2-1 down after an individual error and on 23 minutes we were 3-1 down.

At half time we brought Declan Denison on, he turned up late and couldn't start the game, and to be fair we missed him as in the second half he battled for everything and won tackles that we simply weren't winning in the first half.

However we conceded within two minutes of the restart. From our own corner a Menston player picked up the ball and ran the length of the pitch before finishing and making the score 4-1.

We didn't let our heads go down and continued to press for goals and super sub Ramiro Sturla came on and scored what was a deserved goal for both himself and the team on 55 minutes.

A lapse of concentration and failure to clear the ball gifted Menston a fifth goal with two minues to go which made the score slightly flattering towards Menston.

But there is no denying they were an excellent side and will do well in the rest of this competition against teams from any division.

The most important thing for us was to discard the shocking performance we put on at Woodkirk and to revert to our battling and hard working performances we have displayed thoughout the season and we did that in this match.

The man-of-the-match award could have gone to a few players, Billy Clarke and Stephen Carr were excellent at the back, Lawrence Roberts did an excellent job in the role we gave him and Declan Denison was superb when he turned up!

But this week's man-of-the-match went to Taf Mumbanya who put in an excellent performance at left mid, displaying excellent skill and some superb deliveries. Well done Taf!

In summary although we are out of the cup, we are pleased with the performance and if we carry that back into our league games we can get some more point on the board.

Squad: Trust Ncube, Dom Roberto, Billy Clarke, Stephen Carr, Michael Chukwu, Oliver Batley, Aiden Yaffe, Lawrence Roberts, Josh Baggott, Taf Mumbanya, Markel Henry, Ramiro Sturla, Declan Denison, Macaulay Bennett

Man-of-the-match: Taf Mumbanya.
