Non-League soccer: Weaver fuming as Town are done four

HARROGATE TOWN boss Simon Weaver was left totally gutted after his side crashed 4-0 at home to promotion-chasing Stalybridge Celtic in Blue Square North on Saturday.

Two goals from Jody Banim and further strikes from Lee Dodgson and Michael Carr ensured Celtic ran out comfortable winners at the CNG Stadium.

Weaver will be looking for a vast improvement when Harrogate make the return visit to Stalybridge next weekend, with tomorrow's scheduled match against stricken Farsley Celtic very much in doubt.

Weaver said: "I gave people jobs, but they didn't carry them out. Some of the experienced lads didn't do it and were devoid of any character.

"Sometimes when you're in this position you find out a lot about people. Today it was particularly disappointing.

"For the second goal no-one has made a tackle and he's just waltzed around players. Where's the fight?

"I've had four broken legs, six broken noses and 60 stitches in my head. But I was hurting in the heart today more than any superficial pain..."

Town started well but Stalybridge gradually began to dominate and they never looked back.

Banim opened the scoring in the 38th minute following a corner and Dodgson doubled the tally after the turnaround when he ran through unchallenged and tapped into an empty net.

It was 3-0 just after the hour when Carr headed home and Banim completed the scoring with his second goal of the game in the 75th minute.

Town are scheduled to return to action tomorrow at Farsley but the padlocks remain on the gates at Throstle Nest after administrators Mazars rejected the latest offer for the club from a council-backed consortium led by president John Palmer on Friday.

Mazars had taken the keys back from Palmer’s consortium – who had been running the club since it entered administration in the summer – after rejecting an earlier offer last Monday.

Farsley’s match against AFC Telford last Tuesday night was postponed and Saturday’s home game with Workington went the same way.

Charge

A statement from the league read: “The Football Conference confirm that the fixture between Farsley Celtic and Workington scheduled for Saturday, 6th March 2010 in the Blue Square North has been postponed.

“This is due to further written confirmation from the Administrators overseeing the financial affairs of Farsley Celtic that the club are unable to fulfil this fixture.

“Farsley Celtic will now face a further charge in respect of Football Conference Rule 8.6 and the Board of the Football Conference will seek to issue a further statement in the week commencing 8th March as this now constitutes two breaches of the said rule.”

Meanwhile, York City crashed 2-1 at Forest Green in the Blue Square Premier.

Danny Powell put Forest Green ahead on 22 minutes when he chipped the ball over Michael Ingham.

York levelled matters after 35 minutes when Levi Mackin got on the end of a Chris Carruthers cross and his deflected shot left home keeper Danny Ireland with no chance.

But Green scored what turned out to be the winner 10 minutes into the second half when substitute Ollie Thorne got on the end of a free kick, with Ingham unable to prevent his shot creeping over the line.

City boss Martin Foyle said: “We were undone because of a lucky goal and then poor marking from a setpiece for the second goal.

“Forest Green were stronger than us in certain areas. We are in a bit of a rut at the moment and Tuesday night is now a must-win situation.”

York host Salisbury City tomorrow evening.
