NLCC victorious in season finale
North Leeds won a close match against visitors Bristol CC at the weekend. Read match report here.
The tourists arrived at the ground less than sober having travelled up on Friday night to sample the delights of Leeds night life.
Bristol won the toss and bizarrely chose to ask the home team to bat despite several of their team looking in desperate need of a siesta. Granted, the torrential rain had juiced up the batter friendly wicket at The Homestead somewhat and there was plenty of pace and bounce in the wicket for the bowler; however Tim Hales carried on with his rich vein of form by striking a superb century to finish his season in style.
Veteran batsman, Stan Singleton, returning to North Leeds following his first season at Scarcroft CC, barely troubled the scorers which brought young Will Jackson to the crease. Will batted as if it was mid-August at The Oval, and a succession of leading edges were bound to result in his downfall eventually.
Farhan Khan didn't trouble the scorers too much, and Barry Singleton kept Tim company with a quick 35 runs. The final Singleton, elder brother Mark, then batted beautifully to score a delightful half century and contributions from the lower order helped the North to reach 240 off their allotted 40 overs with the game being played as per the Pro40 League rules.
Oliver White and Andrew Cheeseman opened the bowling for North Leeds and both bowled excellent spells to put Bristol on the back foot. Bristol were always behind the run rate and the match was meandering to a disappointing finish before their 1st XI number 11 batsman decided to show his team mates up by smashing 84 off 36 balls.
NLCC skipper, Barry Singleton, had held his 8 overs back until the end and he took 5 wickets as the ball twisted and turned like a twisty turny thing (thanks Ben Elton and Richard Curtis for writing that line in Blackadder).
North Leeds won in the dark with seven balls remaining, and the teams adjourned to the bar.
The season truly is over now, and all that is left is for the players to try and not put too many pounds on as they attend dinner dances to raise funds for next season.
