Newcastle Falcons swoop for Spice

Newcastle have confirmed the signing of veteran scrum-half Jason Spice on a short-term contract.

The 35-year-old New Zealander left Bristol in the summer after they failed to gain promotion to the Aviva Premiership and had been playing on a game-by-game basis for Launceston in National One.

He had a short spell with Leicester last month and will now join the struggling Falcons as cover for Micky Young.

Head coach Alan Tait said: "Spice provides much needed cover for Micky Young at scrum-half. He also brings with him a wealth of experience which is invaluable for the club."

Spice, who counts Wellington, Waikato, Ospreys and Cardiff Blues among his former sides, will not play in Sunday's Amlin Challenge Cup clash with Exeter Chiefs but is expected to feature in the crucial Premiership meeting with Leeds Carnegie on Boxing Day.
