New Farnley CC battle hard against unbeaten Wrenthorpe
Unbeaten big spending league leaders Wrenthorpe were the opposition at Lawns Lane.
Sun was beating down, the 'faithful' were expectant and we were eager to again upset the form book having beaten them at home for last two seasons!
Batted first on a hard true dry track and openers Hill and Nick Cullen looked untroubled seeing off the openers putting on a useful 40 plus. A bowling change saw Cullen (26) 'triggered' lbw to ex Yorkshire player Gary Fellows. Petricola the Australian at NF this term, joined Hill and moved the score onto 85 until Petricola (17) was unluckily bowled by David Paynter, as he played a forward defensive shot the ball spun viciously backwards onto his stumps. But at 85 for 2 off 25 overs it was a good platform to build on – or so we thought!
23 overs and 4 balls later we were all out for 140. Hill again, as he seems to have to do every week, tried to hang it all together but was out for 40 and of the last 7 batsmen only Harris and Russell reached double figures!
Our soft underbelly of batting really is beginning to cost us dear.
Wrenthorpe's response was quick and clinical. John Inglis, their big money transfer from Methley (Wrenthorpe are the 'Chelsea' of the CYL Premier) bludgeoned our attack and was finally out for 56 out of 80. 5 balls later it was 84 for 2 as Will Smith took his second wicket bowling Paynter for 4. Start of a NFCC type collapse? Not on your life! 12 overs later it was all over! Defeated by 8 wickets with over 25 overs to spare!
Wrenthorpe left unbeaten and unbowed whilst we were left to review the 'wreckage'!
