The Grammar School at Leeds under-16 netball team, pictured right, defeated defending champions Oldham Hulme 12-9 in the final to win the England Netball National Schools Championships in Basildon, Essex.

And former England player and GSAL coach Alex Kirk admitted focus was the key.

She said: “This competition is the highlight of the school’s netball calendar.

“The girls were focused and improved throughout the day. They drew the second match but regrouped and tried even harder.

“They have trained with dedication all season.”

GSAL won seven and drew one game en route to the final and remain unbeaten so far this season.

This outstanding achievement was recognised as the team won the “Defensive Trophy” last Saturday for conceding just 41 points in eight matches.
