Head Coach Tony Handforth, a former Wakefield Trinity coach and a founder of the Royals, suffered a stroke last November.
Methley, under caretaker coaches Terry Crosthwaite and Ernie Skerrett, put the setback – and the death of their landlady at their Royal Oak base, Margaret Banham - behind them by finishing a creditable third in Division Two last time but Handforth, who had hoped to return for the build-up to the new campaign, has not recovered sufficiently to conduct training sessions.
Kelvin Skerrett, who enjoyed a successful spell as coach at neighbouring Oulton Raiders several years ago, has willingly stepped into the breach in his home village.
Vice-chairman, Phil Hodgson, told Kippax Today: "We're delighted to have Kelvin, one of the most knowledgeable people in the game, at the helm and we're sure we'll continue to prosper under his stewardship. He's a big name in Rugby League, an astute coach and, importantly, a local lad.
"Tony Handforth has done a magnificent job for the Royals, and the club will always be grateful to him for his tremendous input in our formative years. We're sorry that he isn't quite fit enough to remain in charge but there will always be a place for him at Methley, perhaps in an advisory role to the coaching staff."
