Melissa is a world No 1 – aged 13!
CRAWSHAW High School in Pudsey has its own world champion after Melissa Holmes' exploits at the Karate World Cup in Escov, Sweden.
The 13-year-old, who only took up the sport three and a half years ago, was selected for the AMA Great Britain Squad and ended up winning gold in the female under 40kg section and the team kata event for 13-15-year-olds.
She then collected a bronze for her efforts in the individual kata in her age group.
Melissa trains on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Eccleshill Karate Club in Bradford while on Thursdays her parents, Tracey and Paul, take her to Bury in Lancashire for more instruction. Every six weeks she attends national squad training in Walsall where she is selected for forthcoming competitions.
Mum Tracey said: "We support her every inch of the way and she's done fantastically well – this is the best she's ever done.
"The sport gives her confidence, earns her respect and gives her discipline.
"It seems to have an effect in every area of her life and I believe she's doing fantastically well at school as a result."
Melissa is looking to compete at an event in Venice in December and anyone interested in sponsoring her should get in touch with Paul Holmes on 07717 201198.
