Match reports: Calverley United U-9s v Sandy Lane Reds U-9s
Calverley United took on Sandy Lane Reds in their latest league clash.
Calverley Blues 1
Sandy Lane Reds 2
Calverley went into this game knowing that they must win to keep their title dreams alive.
Sandy Lane started off well and nearly took the lead but for a fine save from Matthew Hodges who turned the ball round the post for a corner.
But from the resultant corner Sandy Lane scored through Conner Rankin. Calverley responded well but could not make the pressure count. Harris Thompson made a great solo run from the halfway line but with only the keeper to beat shot wide.
But Harris Thompson was not be denied when a great ball from Callum Littlejohn put Harris Thompson though on goal to score with a clinical finish. Calverley went into the break full of confidence.
The second half continued where Calverley left off applying all the pressure but just could not score. The best of several chances falling to Danny Taylor who just could not find the finishing touch to some fine moves and Calverley were made to pay.
Against the run off play Sam Thomas hit an ambitious shot towards goal with little or no power. A miss understanding between Harry Davis and Matthew Hodges resulted in the ball somehow finding the back of the net. A game for Calverley to forget.
Calverley Yellows 2
Sandy Lanes Reds 1
Calverley Yellows are well in the title mix. If they win all their remaining games then the title is theirs. As a famous manager once said "this is squeaky bum time!"
This game was made more difficult due to atrocious weather conditions.
Calverley started off brightly with George Thomas making one of his mazey runs to find himself clear on goal only to shoot against the keeper.
Calverley kept up the pressure but just could not score. Then Chrissy Brown picked up the ball from within his own half and rand through the Sandy Lane defence. Keeping his composure he shot past the keeper. 1:0. Calverley nearly went 2-0 up when just before halftime Owen Bailey shot against the post.
The second half was much the same with Calverley pushing for goal. Eventually it game through Owen " the poacher" Bailey when he put a foot out to flick the ball past the keeper. Sandy lane would not lie down and scored to make it 2-1. From then on it was all Sandy Lane. But Calverley Yellows held on for a hard fought victory in difficult conditions. Roll on summer!
