Using the wind well the Hornets spent most of the first ten minutes camped in the opposition 22 with the Doncaster side defending manfully and only managing to relieve pressure by kicking to touch which allowed the Hornets lineout to regain possession and get back on the front foot.
After 10 minutes pressure eventually told with Steven Riley slotting a penalty for the first points of the game. 3-0.The pattern of the game continued much the same with Yarnbury being awarded a second penalty in a kickable position, this time the usually reliable Riley only managed to hit the left hand upright.
For all their possession and territory Yarnbury were yet to create a real try scoring opportunity but not for lack of effort. On twenty minutes Steve Foster made a good break after being put through on the scissors but was eventually wrapped up by the full back when one-on-one.
The persistent pressure upon them seemed to be getting the Wheatley Hills team frustrated and on 25 minutes one of the lock forwards decided to vent his frustration on the Yarnbury fly half in the form of a few strong uppercuts. He was duly rewarded with a ten minute breather.
Now with a man advantage Yarnbury pressed and pressed. Firstly towards the right corner where a chip over the top by James Bell was only covered by the last defender kicking to touch, and then from the resulting lineout making aggressive runs down the centre. Finally all the time spent in the Wheatley half told as a couple of simple passes put Jason Hall through a gap and over the line to score, also having the presence of mind to go nearer the posts to ensure the simplest of conversions. 10-0.From the restart, Yarnbury kicked long and were straight back on top in the Wheatley 22 as the kick was knocked forward. A high tackle resulted in another easy penalty for Riley taking the score to 13-0 to the home side at the half time break.
The second half was going to be a big test against the strong breeze but Yarnbury looked good for their lead up to this point. The second half started with Wheatley kicking off and they went straight on the attack into Yarnbury territory and earned a penalty and an attempt at goal in the very first minute. This attempt was unsuccessful, missing to the right but followed up in the fifth minute with another chance, this time straight between the sticks. 13-3.
Wheatley were using the wind well and after 11 minutes of the half they were to be handed a further advantage. Half time substitute Jack Butler took exception to what he considered a high shot and was dismissed from the play.It would be a long 30 minutes to the final whistle and Wheatley got the score back in front with a wide out try for their left winger after persistent play in the Yarnbury 22 metre area . Wheatley now seemed to be permanently in the Yarnbury 22, with repeated penalties on the 5 metre line and a series of attacking scrums finally managing to get over the line only to be held up. Yarnbury were really struggling to get any distance on clearing kicks and from one missed touch Wheatley kicked over the top to the other side of the field and the broken field defence was not up to the challenge. The kick was not dealt with and Wheatley re-gathered the ball to cross in the left corner for a soft try. It was a tough conversion attempt from wide out which was missed. 13-8.
Yarnbury resolve was really being tested from the restart and they decided to try and start running the ball as opposed to kicking which was proving difficult. Notably Alex Clark was growing in confidence with the ball in hand was starting to make real in-roads. Andrew Keegan slotted well into midfield as 14 man Yarnbury shuffled their pack. Now in the final ten minutes it seemed that Yarnbury were in the ascendancy until from a misplaced kick and only one phase of play Wheatley only needed one pass to get round a tiring and outnumbered Yarnbury defence to score their second try. The extras were added to put Wheatley in the lead for the first time in the game. 13-15.
Yarnbury were not going to lay down and accept defeat so with what looked like strong resolve and a massive desire to win the game they kicked off and regained the ball with a good chase from skipper Adam Reynolds. Time was short and Yarnbury were pushing forwards with only the win in mind. They got the reward that their attacking intent deserved when they were awarded a penalty 10 metres out from the Hills line, but only 5 metres in from the left touch line. Steve Riley stepped up and slotted the kick and the win was secured as the final whistle sounded immediately after the kick. 16-15.
A dramatic rollercoaster of a game with the conditions playing a big part. A hard fought win which will stand the Hornets in good stead for their first league encounter of the season away at Selby next week. Special mention to Alex Crowther who grows in confidence with every game and a warm welcome to new recruit Paul Edmonds who looked right at home in the front row for the second half.
