In came Mark Dixon at 15, returning after a foot injury during pre-season; James Daffern on the flank who has a good pedigree with a number of first team caps to his name, joined by Tom Daniels and Andy Jordan who both impressed representing other Yarnbury sides last week.

The Hornets started at an astonishing pace on what was another glorious day of Horsforth sunshine. Yarnbury opened the scoring in two minutes.

Pontefract kicking long down the centre of the field only to see the ball returned with interest by fullback Dixon, tricky feet and raw pace got him past a couple of defenders before offloading to the hard working Mark Fielding on his shoulder.

He showed his experience by taking contact on his own terms, allowing quick ball for Tom Bowman and after two sets of hands the ball again found its way to Dixon who bisected the defence streaking a full 40 yards to score wide on the left. Tom Daniels confidently adding the extras to make the score 7-0.

Yarnbury continued to dominate the early exchanges with Ian Burrows and Adam Malthouse taking good lineout ball on either teams throw and the front row of Tom Whitfield, Andy Jordan and Rob Bristow holding their own in the scrummages against a much larger Pontefract unit.

In the tenth minute a lineout on half way was taken cleanly by the ever improving Burrows and the ball off the top sent wide early to the backs.

Good hands and an audacious line cut by Mark Dixon and he was away again.

This time his scorching pace helped him beat all the would be defenders to touch down under the posts. A much easier kick for Daniels and the score was 14-0.

Not soon after extending the lead Pontefract came back with a score of their own, they advanced steadily up the field with a combination of tight and wide work culminating in a good flat pass to fox the Yarnbury midfield defence and crash over from short range. The conversion was unsuccessful. 14-5.

Over confidence from Yarnbury lead to a dropped ball and Pontefract penalty and drive which lead to a try.

A Daniels penalty made it 17 - 10 at the break.

Pontefract managed two more tries, one converted, to give them the victory by a margin of 17-22.
