In the midst of a league season where the boys are struggling to make an impact on some high class opposition, the Cup campaign represented some welcome relief and the chance to take on teams of similar ability.
An away fixture at Myrtle Park, which resulted in a narrow defeat last season, was clearly not going to be easy but at least the team knew they had nothing to fear.

Following a respectful minute silence to mark Remembrance Sunday, the home team kicked off in cold, blustery conditions on a heavy, stamina-sapping pitch. The early exchanges were closely matched and the boys were clearly relishing the chance to prove that their league form was misleading. The aspect that stood out immediately was how solid the defence appeared, with Josh A making some vital interceptions and Andrew reading the game like an old hand. Tom and Michael also ensured that the home strikers had few opportunities, and in goal Sam C raced from his line several times to clear dangerous through balls.
In midfield, Joe orchestrated some excellent passing, while Sam H, Joseph and Leon fought hard to create chances for the strike force of Matthew and Kaylem, who both caused problems for the home defence.
Gradually, Horsforth began to seize control and it came as no surprise when the deadlock was broken. This followed a fine run and shot by Kaylem that was only parried by the keeper and an alert Sam H slid home from an acute angle. Rather than sit back on their lead, Horsforth stepped up a gear and dominated the rest of the first half. Substitute Fraser made a stunning impact when he entered the fray, first firing home from long range, then following it with a tap-in to make it 3-0, but the best was yet to come! Clearly on the scent of a hat-trick, Fraser picked up the ball on the left fought off some challenges and rifled a searing shot into the bottom corner to make it 4-0. Although the home team pulled a goal back, the margin was restored by another excellent goal by Sam H which made it 5-1 at half time.
In the second half, Callum and Josh P were brought on to provide fresh impetus and both figured in an impressive all-round team performance. More goals looked inevitable and it wasn't long before Sam H thrashed the ball home after a powerful run, to complete his hat-trick.
Soon afterwards Matthew made an excellent run down the right and pulled back a perfect cross for Kaylem to poke home from close range, making the score 7-1. To their credit, Myrtle refused to lie down and they pulled a goal back 5 minutes from the end. Amazingly Horsforth still had time to extend their lead, with Matthew claiming 2 late goals.
First a mazy dribble and fine finish into the top corner, then a poacher's goal, made the final score 9-2 and capped a superb performance by all the boys.
No praise could be high enough for the resilience that the boys showed in this match, particularly after the hammerings that they have taken this season in the league. The team's league results might suggest that they have not progressed, but this match allowed them to measure themselves against a team they lost to last season. So to turn that round and inflict a heavy defeat, shows that the boys are learning lessons from playing at a higher level, even though it may not always feel that way!!
Much credit must also go to Ian, who managed the team today and got them off to a flying start.
