Match report: Barnsley U-16s v Yarnbury U-16s

Horsforth's Yarnbury U-16s travelled to South Yorkshire for their last game of the season to play a well drilled Barnsley side.

Barnsley U-16s 26

Yarnbury U-16s 29

With South Yorkshire sides being the fly in the ointment for the Yarnbury side this season, it wasn't going to be a fixture for the faint hearted.

The hosts kicked off and play was even for the first quarter of an hour until centre Andrew Thrussell broke the line with second row Matty Robinson in support who crossed to break the deadlock.

The home side were awarded a penalty try when full back Lloyd Cunningham was left wanting and committed a high tackle in what was definitely the correct referee decision, giving an easy conversion to nudge Barnsley in front.

Daniel Pound at fly half was running the game, taking the ball to the home side, varying play between the forwards and the wide men, Nathan Charles and Matthew Beardow who were denied on several occasions by some good cover from the home side, but on half an hour scrum half Jack Haire found prop Tom Baxter who passed to the ever present Matty Robinson to score his second. Pound kicked the conversion to give Yarnbury the half time lead, 7 – 12

Yarnbury were the first to the mark in the second half, with changes to the back row, lock and wingers. Pound kicked over the onrushing defence, Thrussell chased and pressured the defence into a mistake on which Joe Swan collected the ball and ran in unopposed under the posts to score his first try for the club. Pound made the conversion.

The home side were not happy and responded with two quick tries in succession to level the score.

Yarnbury pressured their hosts at every opportunity, contesting the lineout and forcing Barnsley into mistakes. Sam Ouassine pressured the defensive kicker into dropping the ball in goal from their lineout, and Yarnbury captain Alexander Woodhouse pounced on the loose ball to put Yarnbury in front with 15 mins to play.

Barnsley continued to press at every opportunity but were denied with some good covering tackling by Thrussell, yet found themselves back in front with a well taken converted try.

Yarnbury were not to be outdone, following a little bit of handbags, Barnsley kicked for safety from their own 22m, with Adam Roebuck collecting the miss directed kick on the half way he ran like the wind for a right corner touchdown with just minutes left to play.

An excellent game of rugby from all player on both sides, ending a very good season for the Yarnbury under 16's, celebrated in true style with corks popping and singing in the showers.

Daniel Pound and James Hallam were awarded joint Player of The Match.
