Cross Gates Lions opened their league campaign with an away game at Calverley.
Within two minutes Calverley had come close with a shot across the face of the goal, just inches wide. At the other end Rose came close with a strike for Cross Gates. On ten minutes a low corner from Rose was volleyed in at close range by Luke Watson, his first goal for the team on his league debut. On twenty minutes though Calverley levelled the score and just five minutes later made it 2-1. But on twenty seven minutes Cross Gates levelled. Bilbey headed the second for the Lions after Elwen had beaten the defender on the right and crossed the ball into the box which Calverley failed to clear.
In the second half Calverley made it 3-2 just five minutes into the half after a long ball from the half way line went over the defence and was latched onto by a Calverley striker.
Cross Gates then weathered a fifteen minute period of intense pressure from Calverley. Keeper Maskill kept Cross Gates in the match with some excellent close range saves and Brown and Leeds played solidly in defence.
Cross Gates managed to regroup and the last ten minutes saw Bilbey fire wide after an excellent passing move through midfield and then a free kick from Rose would have needed just a touch as it went across the face of the goal.
Final score a 3-2 win for Calverley. For Cross Gates a disappointing result but not a disappointing performance.
