Simon Grayson sacked: Raddy Antic up for Leeds United role - agent

Former Serbia boss Raddy Antic has set his sights on the vacant manager’s job at Leeds United.

The 63-year-old has applied for the post occupied until earlier this week by Simon Grayson.

Sources close to Antic have revealed the hugely experienced coach is ready to return to the English game and would relish the opportunity to resume his career at Elland Road.

Bookmakers William Hill today installed Huddersfield’s Lee Clark as a 5/4 favourite and were quoting former QPR manager Neil Warnock at 7/2.

Antic’s press agent Paul Gough said: “Radomir will undoubtedly be one of the most experienced and qualified coaches to apply for the Leeds job.

“He is hugely qualified and immensely hungry for the opportunity. He would love the chance to boss at Elland Road - it is something he knows he would be very successful at.”

Antic, who spent four years at Luton during his playing days, launched his coaching career at Real Zaragoza, and his impressive curriculum vitae since has seen him take the helm at Real Madrid, Real Oviedo, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Celta Vigo before he was appointed as Serbia coach in 2008.

He guided his side to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa but, after a disappointingly early exit, lost his job in September of the same year.

After an opening defeat by Ghana, the Serbians stunned Germany - who went on to reach the semi-finals - with a 1-0 victory in Port Elizabeth, before a 2-1 loss to Australia ended their Group D campaign and ensured a swift return home.

Antic received a four-game touchline ban and a fine for unruly behaviour as a result of comments made in the wake of the final game.

It would be kinda funny if one Serb, Zigic, gets Grayson the boot with his four goal demolition of his Leeds defence, only for another Serb, Raddy Antic, to get the job. Zigic was in the Serbian 2010 world cup team managed by Raddy Antic. Yugoslavia has many top class players that could be picked up on the cheap, which might appeal to penny pincher Bates, and also, Antic has managed both Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as Atletico Madrid. He's a top coach, but it might be a bit of a culture shock for some of the Leeds players used to the Grayson and Snodin coaching sessions. He's a worldly sort of a bloke, and if Bates likes him, he might get the job. Don't forget he scored the goal that got Manchester City relegated at Maine Road, when he played for Luton under David Pleat, his early mentor when he took up coaching. That fact alone makes him an acceptable Leeds manager. But anyone that got a Manchester club relegated, AND has managed Real Madrid and Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and WANTS THE JOB OF LEEDS BOSS, is deffo worth a look. He has managed and coached some of the worlds best players, has a lifetime of experience, and this would be a big challenge for him. He would be like a Serbian Bobby Robson. As has been noted elsewhere, he builds teams from a solid defensive foundation, but he likes to play attacking football, and is big on throwing young lads in, if he thinks they have what it takes. He might be a good fit for LUFC. He has a footballing brain a hundred times bigger than Neil Warnock, and a better command of the English language too.

To comment 18: No, pal I'll leave the wiki to you. Antic is only remembered in Spain for his time at Club Atlético de Madrid SAD which means "Sociedad Anónima Deportiva" when they won the double in 1996 (quite a while back!) and not when he was commenting for Cadena SER or manager at Real Oviedo, etc. In England he scored the goal that avoided Luton Town being demoted on the last day of the season to the old Division Two when David Pleat was in charge (and that was further back in time!). Understood pal?

How about Joe Jordan? Joes done a great job coaching at Spurs and Portsmouth, and must have learned a lot from Harry Redknapp. Also I don't think he would settle for anything less than 100% from his players , as he was that kind of player himself.

Big name will demand big budget from Uncle Ken's warchest. This is just not gonna happen. Bates, as always , will go for a young , cheap manager who will work on a shoestring & do as he is told. Can't help feeling Grayson was made scapegoat for Bates out campaign , the guy is so far removed he just cannot see how unpopular he is with the fans. I fear Bates will try and show fans who's really boss around ER and complete his revenge attack by going for the least expected candidates such as Ince or Di Matteo or ousider such as Robinson at MK Dons.

What a shame that 'whiteknight1959' decided to attend the game on Saturday, rather than stay at home to learn the basics of the English language.

First of all Paz i would dearly love to see that happen, but realistically as another blackpool white, Bpool white has got it spot on with his last post, Antic could be just what we need - a real manager, someone with credentials, a leader of men, a motivator, and just maybe someone who can think outside the box and put us where we belong. Someone like this would make me get excited again as a Leeds Fan. MOT.

The best-credentialled known candidate by that far, it's not funny. He is available, and his remuneration as Serbia national coach was not exhorbitant. Come on Ken, get on your plane and sign him up before someone else does, and we end up having to settle for one of the turkeys named in the YEP Poll.!

Antic would be an intriguing choice. What it does say is that the Leeds United brand still carries with it the charisma from bygone days. The guy has bags of experience and all the relevant contacts. I wonder just who else has put their name forward for the job. I think there might be a few surprises we have'nt even heard mentioned yet. Still one major problem however ken will either have to loose the purse strings or go!!

Guys, look at who is available not at a club, Jones, Dowie,Ince, Robson, even Warnock all predictable and dull. Yes, Warnock somehow has in the past been able to get teams promoted but his football is basic and hits a brick wall when faces quality opposition- always, there is a patern develpoed around him. Read up on Antic and understand his football philosophies and you will see that he bases his sides on steely defences, pacey attacking formations with skillful players. He has an eye for young talent and introduced Valdes,Iniesta to the Barca side.He is famed for his set piece plays and innovative free kicks and tactics. He is a firm, strong leader with open mind to modern techniques. His brother in law is a partner in one of europes leading agents, so he does have contacts. It would be a bold brave appointment and yes I admit it may take a little time for him to sort the mess out but It possibly could be an awsome move. I am sure Bates would be tempted,it may even massage his ego to have such a top coach working for him(under what constraints we fear though).Let off the leash trusted and given some decent transfer funds I for one find the thought of an Antic adventure quite exiting if only because to be honest the other predictable "names" well we kind of know what we will get.

Just read Raddy Antic's C.V. - Very impressive - could do a lot worse. Warnock's the man we should be after, but not sure he fancies it. Bryan Robson is 5 to 1 with some bookies - now he would empty Elland Road !.
