Leeds United: Why Leeds United boss Simon Grayson won't run a goalkeeper risk
Leeds United were bidding to pull off a last-minute loan signing today and prevent any chance of a goalkeeping crisis against Carlisle United.
United have made approaches to several clubs with first-choice Shane Higgs highly unlikely to feature in tonight's League One match at Elland Road.
Higgs suffered a thigh strain during the second half of Saturday's 1-0 victory at MK Dons and his injury placed Leeds in the compromising position of having no substitute keeper available.
Finalise
Experienced Dane Casper Ankergren is expected to make his first league start of the season this evening, having replaced Higgs in Milton Keynes, but manager Simon Grayson was devoid of further cover as his players returned to the training ground yesterday.
United's boss is reluctant to gamble his side's unbeaten league record against Carlisle by fielding an 18-man squad without back-up for Ankergren, and the club were pushing to finalise a loan signing before 12 noon today, in time for Carlisle's visit.
Grayson said: "A lot of calls have gone in to try and keep the squad in good shape.
"I used to run the risk of having no substitute keeper at Blackpool, back when teams were only allowed five subs, but when you're allowed seven then it's foolish not to have keeper on the bench."
