Leeds United: Whites wait on Lowry

Leeds United have delayed a decision on the future of loanee Shane Lowry after sending him back to Aston Villa for scans on a knee problem.

The Australian defender is undergoing treatment at Villa Park on the injury which forced him to miss last weekend's draw with Brentford and Tuesday's victory over Tranmere Rovers, the penultimate fixture of his loan with Leeds.

Lowry rejoined his parent club ahead of the clash at Prenton Park and United are awaiting confirmation of the severity of the damage with Lowry's temporary spell at Elland Road almost at an end.

The 20-year-old's short-term loan concludes after Saturday's match at Southampton – a fixture that Lowry is unlikely to play any part in – but Leeds have the option of extending his deal for the closing stages of the League One season.

United manager Simon Grayson has made regular use of Lowry since signing him at the end of January, and the left-back's appearance in the recent West Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield Town was his eighth start for the club.

He succumbed to injury during a training session at Thorp Arch last week. Eighteen-year-old defender Aidan White replaced Lowry against Brentford and also started at Tranmere, and Leeds are hopeful that Ben Parker will soon be fit enough to offer another alternative at left-back.

Grayson would still be interested in retaining a fully-fit Lowry, but the Leeds boss said: "If he comes back and when he comes back depends on his injury.

"His loan finishes at the weekend but we have got the option to extend it. He's gone back to Aston Villa for some treatment and some scans so we'll see where we are on that one. It's disappointing to lose him but I thought Aidy White had another really solid game against Tranmere."

United's squad was affected by a sudden spate of injuries last week, and fringe striker Mike Grella is expected to spend up to three weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring strain sustained in training on Friday.
