Marvin Emnes opened his account for the season at the first time of asking on Saturday and might yet fulfil his potential on Teesside.
Boro paid £3.2m to sign the 23-year-old from Sparta Rotterdam in July 2008, but their return on that investment has been modest, amounting to five league goals and 10 in all.
He has made just 63 appearances in three seasons and was loaned to Swansea by Gordon Strachan last season.
