Fabian Delph will miss Leeds United’s clash with Doncaster Rovers after returning to Aston Villa for treatment on his ankle injury.

The on-loan midfielder strained ligaments in Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Coventry City and is fighting to be fit in time for the final game of his month-long spell at Elland Road.

Delph’s temporary deal with Leeds is due to conclude after next weekend’s visit to Portsmouth and his injury could spell the end of his time with United.

Villa were expected to recall the 22-year-old after his initial loan having refused to allow him to come to Elland Road until the end of the Championship season.

Delph has started United’s last five games but he was hurt during the second half of their clash in Coventry and left the Ricoh Arena on crutches.

United caretaker manager Neil Redfearn said: “He’s going to be out tomorrow but I’m hoping it’ll be days rather than weeks.

“He’s gone back down to Villa to be assessed and, to be fair to them, he’s their player.

“We’re grateful to them for letting us have him.

“Fab’s a good player and I thought he played really well in the two games before Coventry.

“He’s a big influence and it’s a big loss.”

Delph is likely to be replaced in United’s midfield tomorrow by Michael Brown or Mika Vayrynen.

Leeds have no other new injuries problems but Redfearn confirmed that changes were likely after their woeful loss to Coventry.

He said: “The rest of the squad has to have the feeling that places are up for grabs.

“There’ll definitely be one change and probably two or three.”
