Leeds United v Brighton and Hove Albion: Sparrow ban leaves Seagulls a bird light
Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale (left) and Brighton and Hove Albion's Matt Sparrow battle for the ball.
Brighton midfielder Matthew Sparrow will miss Saturday’s clash with Leeds United at Elland Road after Albion chose to accept the red card shown to him on Saturday.
Sparrow will now start a three-match ban this weekend following his dismissal in Brighton’s 1-0 victory over Leicester City.
The former Scunthorpe United player incurred a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Leicester’s Ben Marshall, and the Seagulls decided against an appeal after the match report from referee Andy Woolmer described the foul as “dangerous and reckless”.
Saturday’s match in Leeds will bring former United assistant and Brighton boss Gus Poyet to Elland Road, little more than a week after he criticised United’s decision to sack long-standing manager Simon Grayson.
Poyet said: “I didn’t understand the decision. I like (United chairman) Ken Bates a lot but I’m sorry Ken, wrong.
“You’re only able to base your opinion on results. I’ve seen Simon’s record at Leeds and it’s very good. At the end of the day you live by your decisions.”
