Leeds United: Twitter is just not for me - Ormsby
Leeds United legend Brendan Ormsby answers your questions.
Brendan,
The Leeds United players are back on Twitter, I see. Would you have tweeted if it was around when you were playing in the good old days?
Paul Davies, Methley
No, definitely not. And if anyone is wondering, I don’t know how to get on it now either!
I saw John Hendrie and Alan Knill on a late night soccer chat show earlier this week saying they don’t know how to use Twitter and I am exactly the same.
I just can’t be bothered, although maybe I’m a prehistoric monster.
I’ve never been into technology and can just about use my mobile phone, although even that has got loads of screens!
I know social media is the way the world is going and we need to move on, but in terms of football, I know it’s caused a lot of problems by what the likes of Joey Barton have been saying. Or tweeting.
Simon obviously barred the players from using it and Neil must have now given them permission to use it.
Looking at it, the players are all adults and many are grown-up men with families and for me as a manager, it would be a difficult thing for me to say: ‘You can’t use that’ to my players. It’s a way of life now.
With my team, Pontefract Collieries, people are going on Twitter and while not having a go at me directly, some aren’t coming to me and saying: ‘Why am I not in the team?’
And then I hear about it after someone has said so-and-so has put something on Twitter.
But I don’t see what is said because I don’t get on it.
As a manager, you just want players to talk to you first. Do it that way instead of telling the whole world your problems on Twitter just for some sympathy!
From what I’ve seen with Twitter, people put on stuff like: ‘I’m just watching telly,’ or ‘I’m just boiling a cup tea/watching Coronation Street.’ Who the hell wants to know about that?
Twitter just does not interest me. I just about get away with emailing people when I need to.
I’m one of those who feels he doesn’t need to tell the world what is going on with my life. Maybe times have changed, but I cannot imagine that I would have used it if it had been around back in the day I was a player.
It’s just not for me, I’m afraid.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 02:16 PMWell M Ormsby you have just tweeted a ridiculous article in the YEP!! I have followed Leeds United for 52 years and with all due respect there are 2 main points you comment on;. a) the fact that you yourself have not moved with the times ;-at 22 years younger than myself you are showing that are old before your time. I am adept with modern technology, possess a Smartphone, a laptop and a net book, and I am still nursing till July. b)the fact that LUFC footballers can use Twitter again. In the light of the non transparency of the football club and the present difficulties concerning the chants during the match-I believe it good that the players can see that the fans are behind them and that the issue with the Directors and Chairman of the club is not their problem. If it were not for Dewsy and Thom Kirwin posting team lists on match days those of us who live abroad would be more than frustrated ! Since the players have come back on Twitter they have been professional in their attitude and they are appreciated. I hope their motivation on the pitch increases. They are of an age where technology is part of their lives. Remember there is a difference between being old, and growing old!! PS I also have LUTV on my laptop, and when we had all the problems with reception it was to Dewsy we turned on Twitter to help us out: MOT
