Leeds United: Neil Warnock set for Whites hot seat
Neil Warnock
Leeds UNITED were on the verge of naming Neil Warnock as their new manager today after a round of talks with the former Sheffield United boss.
Warnock met with Leeds chairman Ken Bates and chief executive Shaun Harvey in Monaco yesterday as the club edged closer to securing a replacement for sacked manager Simon Grayson.
United have been without a full-time boss since Grayson’s dismissal a fortnight ago but Warnock emerged as their preferred candidate last night and looks set to take up the post at Elland Road.
Leeds’ Championship season is on a knife-edge with the club six points adrift of the play-offs positions and they have looked to Warnock to revive their faltering campaign.
The 63-year-old travelled with Harvey to meet Bates in Monte Carlo yesterday and he looks likely to be named as Grayson’s successor ahead of next weekend’s match with Portsmouth.
United have been in the hands of academy coach and caretaker Neil Redfearn for the past three games, and he was due to take charge of this afternoon’s Championship clash with Doncaster Rovers at Elland Road.
But his hopes of landing the job for the rest of the season were ended by successive defeats to Brighton and Coventry City, and he will make way next week if Leeds confirm the appointment of Warnock.
Warnock’s CV boasts seven promotions during his managerial career, one short of the outright English record, and he has guided both South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers to the Premier League in the past six years.
He was sacked by QPR last month having led them to the Championship title last season but he is understood to have finalised a severance package with the London club, freeing him to take up a new job.
He was interviewed for the vacant manager’s post at Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this week and also attracted the attention of managerless Huddersfield Town, but he has always favoured the option of taking over at Elland Road.
Speaking earlier this week, Warnock, pictured inset, said: “I’ve got seven promotions and I want one for the record (which he currently shares with Graham Taylor and Dave Bassett). I’ve had some interesting calls.”
The prospect of Warnock’s appointment comes amid spiralling pressure on Leeds, caused by a poor run of form and a lengthy delay in naming Grayson’s replacement.
Grayson was sacked on February 1 after a 4-1 defeat to Birmingham City, bringing to an end his three-year reign.
Countless candidates have been linked with the vacancy, among them former Sunderland and Huddersfield boss Steve Bruce who is understood to have been a leading contender.
lACCRINGTON have completed the signing of Hull City midfielder Jamie Devitt on a one-month loan deal.
The 21-year-old is Paul Cook’s first signing as Stanley manager but has already experienced League Two football this season during a loan spell at Bradford City.
Colchester United have signed highly-rated West Ham United striker Freddie Sears on a month-long emergency loan.
Sears has previously enjoyed loan spells at Scunthorpe United, Coventry and Crystal Palace.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 07:26 PM137york city....You know what I think of you and your loyalties. Anyone with a posting name that is another football club should get back to that club but incase any of your fellow numpties is making the same mistake as you I will say that because I am a lifelong supporter of LUFC SG had my undivided loyalty until he left and my respect, sympathy and grattitude after he left and NW will enjoy the same loyalty from me. So to once again emphasise that this has nothing to do with YORK CITY my post was in reference to the knownowts who can make their mouths say anything and ripped into SG whilst he was here and needed their support yet supported him after he'd left when he didn't need it and I anticipate them trying to destroy NW in the same manner that they destroyed SG who did take 6 points from QPR last season.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 10:33 AMThis site is in danger of degenerating into a slightly dodgy, looking-for-chums column. For goodness' sake, LAST week was Valentine's Day; we're Leeds supporters, and supposed to be hard and unfeeling... we love to be hated. I mean, we're gradually accumulating the whole cast list of Guy Ritchie's film 'Snatch'... we have Boris the Blade as Chairman, the bungling bank robbers on the pitch, a couple of semi-retired bouncers on the Board, and now Boris has appointed Brick Top to pull off the jewel heist of the century. All we need to complete the remake is Vinnie Jones as head coach, a few Brad Pitts who can punch above their weight on the pitch, and an annoying Jack Russell as our mascot ! Now, please, let's have less of pulling each other off and more of pulling IT off !

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 09:50 AMHave just read a football blog in the Sunday Mirror. It's entitled "The Wild World of Warnock" written by Steve Anglesey and is about some of the antics Warnock got up to in his managerial career. It's hilarious. I have only one more comment. Be afraid Ken Bates, be very afraid.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 12:08 AMAt least Ince didn't get the job! Warnock's got his work cut out both on and off the pitch. Leeds were marginally better than they were against Coventry and let's remember we were playing Doncaster today not Real Madrid. At times the players didn't appear to want to play which doesn't bode well for the run in.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:34 PM...I reckon that Bramleys probably in the Service Crew too, and i'd put my life on it that he was one of those smashing the Millwall buses' windows through a couple of seasons ago, on their visit to ER - nice one Bramley (i saw that on Donal Macintyre) Pls don't take offence Bramley, just thinking out aloud. I put £20 on a 4 accumulator today, had Sheff U, MK Dons, Southampton and Leeds, and a 2-0 i thought i'd had it, and then Becchio wins it in the 99th minute. With Leeds winning, the bet winning and Warnock coming in it's been a good day all round. Looking forward to watching the Leeds goals in 20 mins. I like Warnock, he's just what we need..

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:13 PMIt's sad reading all of these comments from you guys, and none of us will never ever know who the person is or what they look like.. I have a picture in my head of what some of the people on here might look like. There's a few on here who i'd like to see who they are, especially originalkoppite, i reckon that he's really one of those sikh guys that sit behind the dug out at Old Trafford (that you always see on match of the day behind Fergie), i think Bramley could have a hair trigger temper, and be a Yorkshire version of Balotelli if that makes sense, and i think LeedsBulldog might be a bit of a hardcase, but a sensible one, who thinks first then decks you after; Pompey Steve, not sure about him, think he could be a kind of Albert Trotter type ? I just wish the YEP would put pictures of the person alongside the username. Mad thoughts i know, but don;t you guys sometimes wonder who you are talking to on the internet ?
