Leeds United: Maybe Becchio has injury in mind - Ormsby

Leeds United legend Brendan Ormsby answers your questions.

Hi Brendan.

Luciano Becchio has been struggling this season, what have you made of his form?

Craig Wilson

I’VE got to be fair Craig – I’ve not seen that much of him with my commitments.

But from what I have seen he’s been struggling for fitness and it’s always difficult for strikers because when you’re not scoring, you’re regarded as not doing your job.

He’s been in and out of the team this year really after missing the first part of the season through injury. In several games, he’s come on for say five or 10 minutes and that’s difficult for a forward.

When you are out with injuries for spells, it can affect you mentally – it did me when I got a bad injury.

Maybe with the injury there have been a few problems in Becchio’s head and he’s wary of it. From what I’ve seen, and from what people have said, he’s not right.

He’s not as sharp as he can be and having been top dog last season now he’s not. And that can affect players, probably strikers more than anything.

When you are the main man and scoring goals and then suddenly the next season you are on the bench, your head can go.

Not being on the pitch for 90 minutes for consistent spells of time and not being first-choice can affect you. Maybe that’s what’s happened.

The bloke's looked as big as a whale since his comeback, and real slow. We've all been wanting Luciano to find his form and fitness, but all I've seen so far is lack of pace, and a nasty habit of falling to the ground while appealing for frees and penalties. Grayson seems determined to select him, a la Kisnorbo, but while the rest of the strikers aren't striking, what can he do? Maybe try Poleon off the bench, the young blokes haven't let him down so far!! MOT

The problem is Grayson. Appalling tactics and an appalling record at transfers and loans. We need a change and soon, this will give the club a lift and restore confidence on and off the pitch.

Leeds seem to have a few problems with players thought processes and mindsets. We are a confidence team and when we are short of confidence we really struggle. With all that in mind, I feel that Leeds should have a top sports psychologist on the books to help with players mindsets - would be a good investment and help players with their positive mindsets.

I think you are right Brendan about the problem being Bechio's head, but not the way you mean. With the service he gets. ie; The ball being lobbed up into the penalty area for him to chase, he's banging his head against a brick wall. When more often than not he has a couple of 6ft plus central defenders confronting him it's no wonder he finds it more difficult to find the net. He needs his wide men to get to the bye line before crossing the ball. We need to get their defenders facing their own goal and give Bechio the opportunity of running in behind them. I think we would create more chances this way and as we know if you don't make chances you do not score goals. I've never been a lover of 4-5-1, I've always believed that strikers operate better in pairs, remember Clarke and Jones and more recently the Blackburn pair Shearer and Wotsisname. all were devastating on a regular basis. People have said that Mac and Bechs can't play together,if so then it's something the coaching staff can work on.
