Leeds United: Billy Davies will listen if Whites come calling

Billy Davies.

Billy Davies.

Billy Davies has refused to rule himself out of the running for the Leeds United job but insists he will only return to management when the right opportunity comes along.

The 47-year-old has been out of work since parting company with Nottingham Forest in June last year.

He says he is willing to speak to interested parties and Leeds could fall into that category after they sacked boss Simon Grayson last week.

Asked if he would be tempted by a move to Elland Road, Davies said: “I’m prepared to listen to anybody. I’ve got no preference - Scotland, England or abroad.

“I’m very happy and very much looking forward to discussing with any interested party.

“That will be at any level. I don’t care what division it is in. I will always give them the courtesy.

“We will wait and see and wait until the right thing comes along and then get back in again.”

The former Motherwell, Preston and Derby County boss says he is willing to bide his time for the right job.

Speaking at the William Hill Scottish Cup draw, he added: “I’m very comfortable taking the break at the moment and watching different levels of football.

“I’m getting to England and watching the Premier League and the Championship and I’m getting up here to Scotland to watch Division One and the Scottish Premier League.

“I’m also taking time out watching my two sons play and I’ve not seen them play for a number of years.

“I’m enjoying the break and I’m waiting for the right moment.

“I’ve had conversations, it hasn’t fitted. I’ll wait for the right moment, the right club with the right ambition.

“When that comes along, I’ll go back into the hairy, scary football management again.”

I'm not sure how this suggestion will get received but how about a Gerard Houllier David 'O' Leary Partnership? May sound daft but both working as a team surely have the ability for getting LUFC back into the PL . Oh well! Just a thought so no harm in the suggestion.

I'm disgusted that nobody has mentioned Carlton Palmer for the job, he's got a footballing brain, he's a motivator, he played for England, he's managed at this level, is it only the fact that he's an ex Leeds player and we've had limited success when appointing ex players to the role. Is that the only reason he's not favourite for the job.

@DD - That argument doesn't add up, as where did Warnock finish in the Championship table ? Also, as far as i know, Davies worked under tougher conditions at Forest than what SG had to endure at Leeds, and look what has happened to Forest since Davies left.. People like me are suggesting those two, as they are both experienced managers, with loads of fire in their bellies, and they have a proven track record at this level, which is obviously very important. It should be horses for courses now shouldn't it ? The points SG's Leeds took off them, doesn't make either of them not good enough for us in my eyes.

I find it interesting that fans are calling for Davies and Warnock as though either of them were the messaiah. Both of them had more money than Grayson to spend last year and Grayson took six points of Warnock and four off Davies, don't say much about their tactical acumen if they were beaten by 'hoofball' Grayson does it BATES OUT

I don't think Billy Davis is the right man for leeds, we ned somone young like Chris Hughton, he would be my choice all day, has done a great job with Newcastle and now with Brum, Very slim chance though as he's only six months into his contract with them. Redders might be up to the job (rem o'leary) But my only concern is that the players might be too comfortable with him. But I do think he should be given a few games to proove himself, and if the team improves then give him a go. Aside from that I like what Lee Clark has done with Huddersfield, we could do worse.

Also, talking of the bookies, don't bother betting on the next permanent Leeds manager and here's why;- It will be Redfearn until the end of the season i suspect, a very risky strategy if that comes to fruition, as Warnock and Davies etc etc may well have been snapped up by then, but that's what i think will happen, he's cheap, up for the job and is obviously well-liked and highly rated by Bates and Harvey and co - so he fits the bill for them until the end of the season ...

Sorry i'm on one, i find it STAGGERING, I MEAN STAGGERING (Paul Merson talk), that Leeds United still get 20,000+ fans going to their Home games. It just shows how bl*ody good and loyal most of the fans are; from my point of view i think they are bl*ody CRACKERS for still going (NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE, especially not LeedsBulldog, more loyal than my two Springer Spaniels), but that's just my opinion of course.. You are all being treated like absolute dirt, and being constantly lied to, yet you keep coming back... I understand how loyal you are, and i do admire that too, but have a real think about where your hard earned money is going.. I'd prefer to give it to the bookies than give it to Bates, at least i have A CHANCE of winning something (unlike Leeds under Bates...)

(10) Bramley - Love your passion for the club mate but don't think the blame for Leeds problems over the last 10 years was caused by Brian Kidd Personally I would have either of them as they both have a track record of getting clubs promoted but will it make a difference whoever is in charge under 'he who should not be named' regime?

Billy Davies would probably fit the bill (astoo would Warnock too) i suspect. Did anyone watch Late Kick Off last night ? They had a piece on Leeds United, it was good. I also listened to Johnny Giles on Talksport, and he totally missed the point. He was on about possible signings, and basically saying that there was no money, unless the fans want to chip 5-10k in each to sign a player - yet he never once said about all the money Bates has had coming in from the sales of many of our better players, which i found staggering.. The guy from the Leeds fans group on late kick off seemed a decent, fair bloke, and he said that they had tried to speak to Leeds United Football Club on numerous occasions over 2 years, and they didn't want to know - what a surprise. The programme asked LUFC to comment - NO REPLY - AGAIN, WHAT A SURPRISE. I often get slated on here for not going to the games, and YES that doesn't make me as gooder fan as the ones that do go, but i can still have my say as far as i'm concerned as i am a lifelong Leeds United fan - whatever anyone says... To the VERY LOYAL fans that still go, can i just ask you a question please:- Doesn't it annoy and nark the hell out of you how you as fans are treated by the football club, and also by Bates and Harvey too ? Doesn't it make you PIG SICK giving them your hard earned money, when our best players are sold for millions of pounds, and NONE OR VERY LITTLE of it is invested back into the team (despite promises of it from both Bates and Grayson saying that the money goes straight into the WARCHEST) ??? I am absolutely disgusted and i have very nearly lost interest in all things Leeds United under this regime; if this WAS ANY OTHER BUSINESS, it would have gone bust ages ago, would you put if with this sort of "service" at your favourite restaurant i ask you ? I'd never go back. I had a problem at a local restaurant, i spent £92 on a meal for 4 and i wasn't happy, so i emailed them, and the manager rang me personally and sorted it and gave me and my girlfriend a free meal, that's what i call customer service. He cares, so so do i. Have a good, hard think Leeds fans about things at our club, and forget all of this "Bates saved us" rubbish - in my opinion it was all fixed and ultra-shady (as per from Bates). And before i start getting slated as Simon Bryan usually does on here, please just have a think about my points. Bottom line is this ;- Better players sold, money not re-invested in the playing squad - as promised, and fans - Leeds United DON'T GIVE A TOSS ABOUT ANY OF YOU, ALL FACTS AS ALWAYS FROM ME. *Also, don't all of you think it;s a tad strange that SG was sacked just after the transfer window was shut - that was so that the new manager couldn't moan about having no money to spend, as the window was shut* ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED I AM.

Davis isn't the right man for the job, BUT he would be able to work around Ken Bates financial restraints as he did this with Forrest. Saying that I now don't think any of the candidates are right deep down. We are picking from an average bunch of managers and don't forget that they have either been sacked for poor performances or still in work as they are doing well and don't want to leave. I think we need to keep with Redfearn until the end of the season, any new manager can not purchase players due to the close of the window. I personally believe Simon was always getting sacked and this was decided in December but Ken didn't want to spend any money so he waited until the window shut. Bring in some key support for Neil, Gary Mc as director of football, coaches like Radebe, Strach, Naylor, etc… Better than getting a sacked second best manager to release them in 2 years as they haven’t worked out either at another cost!
