Leeds United: Barnsley boss refuses to rule himself out of contention

Barnsley boss Keith Hill has refused to rule himself out of contention for the Leeds United manager’s job, but he expects caretaker Neil Redfearn to land the role on a permanent basis.

Hill said rumours linking him to the vacancy at Elland Road were “speculation” but the 42-year-old stopped short of committing himself unequivocally to Barnsley.

The YEP understands that Hill is interested in taking charge of Leeds, who sacked former boss Simon Grayson after three years in charge last week.

United’s squad are currently in the hands of Redfearn and their academy coach has been given the next three matches to stake a claim for a permanent appointment, but Leeds have spent this week assessing expressions of interest from a lengthy list of applicants.

Hill has managed Barnsley to two victories over Leeds this season - a 2-1 win at Elland Road and a 4-1 rout at Oakwell - and his side are six points behind United in the Championship table.

He took over at Barnsley in May after five years as manager of Rochdale.

Asked about the link with Leeds, Hill said: “To be perfectly honest, somebody once said to me ‘you’re only ever three games away from the sack as a manager’ so I’d never rule anything out.

“It’s brilliant with respect to myself. It proves that people are actually taking note of the job I’m doing at Barnsley on limited resources.

“But I’m interested in Barnsley Football Club, my family and looking after David Flitcroft (Barnsley’s assistant manager). That’s it. I’m interested in football, put it that way.

“Anything else is just speculation. I can’t predict what’s going to happen in the future but I’m settled at Barnsley and I’m doing a good job here. Neil Redfearn is doing great at Leeds and it’s probably his job.”

United chairman Ken Bates pointed to United’s heavy defeat at Oakwell on New Year’s Eve after Leeds sacked Grayson, saying: “Don’t forget when we were beaten by Barnsley 4-1, their wage bill was £4.5million. Ours was £11.5million so clearly we’re not getting value for money.”

Dave Jones would be an appointment with the head but how many times have Leeds United used their heads before their hearts?

For me we need a manager who will get the balance right with bringing youth through plus adding decent quality signings even if they from lower leagues and cost extra nothing. Spotting a bargain player big thing for me! Peterborough's Darren ferguson has been good at this and now Barnsley manager Keith hill seems to be at it. I originally wanted Souness but the next best for me would be Dave jones. He speaks well, had Cardiff playing well at home including cup success i believe and bought likes of Marshall, boothroyd, chopra, whittingham, McCormack and brought through players like Gunter and Ramsey.

Question - is that really Keith Hill in the photo OR is it Basil Faulty shouting for Cybil?

I've mentioned it once so no harm in doing so again but I think we'll see a Redfearn 'O' Brien Managerial partenership given that Uncle 'non money bags' himself will no-doubt see this as a cheap & easy solution until the end of the Season.

As i said yesterday ALL BETS ARE OFF!! Bates will use Redfearn win lose or draw till he sees if he starts clocking up the points - or not. I for one wish him well with the players we have cos hes our manager, BUT unless hes running up and down the touchline directing traffic when the heat is on,we may end up with a 'nice but dim' character holding his chin and wondering where it went wrong - I HOPE NOT. i must say that i wish someone from ' outside' was brought in to really push us to end of the season, Good luck Neil and hope it goes well and you can fire the players up - Brighton are no west ham or saints BUT they are no mugs and i envisage a fight on our hands on the pitch on saturday and it will be a BIG test, we will be there on saturday as per usual AND i will be watching how Neil directs our troops into battle, good luck Neil - you may need it with the bearded snake watching your every move! MOT 4 EVA WHEREVER WHENEVER WHATEVER!!

The story that Capello resigned because of Terry having his Captaincy removed by the FA is a smokescreen. He left because he heard the Leeds job was available and that our Chairman and Board are easier to work with than the Old Farts at the FA.

its hardly a dream team being mentioned for the managers job, we need a manager used to taking teams out of the championship. not a barnsley or huddersfield manager,

Bates will take the cheapest possible route, Redfearn will get it and I wish him well. Anyone that can even consider working with Ken Bates is either very brave or just crazy.

When we first played Barnsley this year I didn't have a clue who this guy was, and he was very vocal about himself and his team. They duly turned us over, twice. He has got Barnsely playing some good football, on limited funds, and I for one have been quite impressed with him, and tipped him for the Leeds job. I think that is just the type of character we need, someone with a bit of attitude who isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers. To be honest I can't see anything happening now though, I fully expect Redfearn to be boss until the end of the season at least.
