Leeds United have made an approach to Leicester City to sign Lee Peltier.
Negotiations are taking place between both clubs and the deal could be completed this week, according to sources.
United boss Neil Warnock is working hard behind the scenes on a number of incoming deals and ideally wants several signings confirmed by the start of pre-season training on Wednesday.
That depends on enough cash being freed up to enable him to complete several moves, with United still awaiting completion of their much-publicised takeover – which would effectively give the green light to a spate of transfer activity.
Former Huddersfield Town defender Peltier’s days at Leicester are numbered, with City desperate to get a number of players off their books.
Already this week, Matt Mills – a big-money seven-figure signing for the Foxes last summer – has completed a permanent move to Bolton Wanderers, with the East Midlanders accepting a massive loss.
City will also cut their losses in order to offload Peltier, 25, who arrived from Huddersfield in a £750,000 move just over 12 months ago, with the fee they recoup expected to be somewhat less. The end of Peltier’s time at Leicester was all but confirmed last week when he wasn’t at the club for fitness tests undertaken by the City squad.
Reinforcements on the right- hand side of defence remain a priority area for Warnock, with the only current recognised right-back being Paul Connolly, transfer-listed in May.
Meanwhile, Ipswich Town still appear favourites to land United target Luke Chambers, with his move expected to be completed soon.
The centre-half, available on a free transfer after his deal at Nottingham Forest last weekend, asked for more time to consider his options after undergoing a medical at Portman Road on Tuesday afternoon – sparking speculation that United could have hijacked the move.
But despite the hitch, Town, prepared to almost double the £8,000 a week Chambers was on at Forest, remain confident of getting their man.
On potential incoming deals, Warnock, who so far has signed Jason Pearce, Adam Drury and Paul Green, said: “We’ve just got our targets and we’re hoping that in the next couple of weeks, we can start bringing in more so we can have a full complement as soon as we can during pre-season.
“It’s a matter of trying to find out who is available and what the situation is. You look at their cost, their wages and see where we are at. All I say to the supporters is just wait and see how we are early on.
“I’d ask the fans to trust in me, I’m working for them as well as the club.”
As well as Peltier, Chambers and Paddy Kenny, Warnock is also in the hunt for several other players, including Portsmouth pair Luke Varney and David Norris.
Another player on United’s radar is understood to be West Brom forward Simon Cox, likely to leave the Hawthorns this summer.
