Leeds United: Tres faces a cup KO

Tresor Kandol's bid to start Saturday's FA Cup tie at Oldham Athletic has been wrecked by an impending three-match ban from the Football Association.

The Leeds United striker has admitted a charge of violent conduct relating to last weekend's game against Yeovil Town, and his punishment was set to be confirmed today by an FA regulatory committee.

Kandol was cited over a scuffle which broke out on the field at Elland Road after the end of the United's 4-0 victory over Yeovil, a match in which the former Barnet player appeared as a substitute and scored the final goal.

He and Patrick Kisnorbo became embroiled in a confrontation with Yeovil's Sam Williams seconds after the final whistle, and Kandol lashed out at the 22-year-old striker within yards of the match official, Andy Haines.

Neither Leeds nor Yeovil have indicated what provoked the melee in the centre circle and both managers were dismissive of the incident, but Kandol's offence was reported to the FA by Haines, and his charge was confirmed yesterday.

A three-match suspension – the automatic penalty for violent conduct – would come as a considerable blow to Kandol, who has regained favour at Elland Road after three goals in five appearances this season.

The Congolese international was expected to start Saturday's FA Cup first-round tie at Oldham with Luciano Becchio injured and on-loan Sam Vokes unable to play due to the terms of his contract at Elland Road, but the opportunity looked set to be snatched away from him today.

As well as the fixture at Boundary Park, he is also set to miss United's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Grimsby Town next Tuesday and their League One game at Brighton on November 21.

The 28-year-old is expected to be fined by Leeds in what is standard disciplinary procedure at Elland Road.

Kandol's ban would have concluded after United's visit to Swindon Town on November 14, but the game has been postponed after Patrick Kisnorbo and Rui Marques were called up for international duty by Australia and Angola respectively.

Alan Martin had already been named in Scotland's Under-21 squad for a European qualifier against Azerbaijan, and two further call-ups yesterday gave Leeds the right to delay their match at the County Ground.

Australia are due to play Oman on November 14 while Angola meet Congo in Luanda on the same date. Lubomir Michalik is on standby for Slovakia's forthcoming friendlies against the USA and Chile.
