Leeds United: Striker Dan's on United's radar

Leeds United are ready to bid for Carlisle United striker Danny Graham if Jermaine Beckford completes a transfer away from Elland Road.

Graham is seen by Leeds as a credible replacement for Beckford, who is on the transfer list and may part company with United before next season, and the club are understood to have made enquiries about Carlisle's 23-year-old forward.

The former Middlesbrough trainee has opted to leave Brunton Park this summer at the end of his contract, and he made his intentions clear by rejecting the offer of a new deal with Carlisle.

Though technically unattached, Graham does not turn 24 until early August and Carlisle would be entitled to a fee for him as part of any transfer due to his age.

The forward is known to Leeds having completed a month-long loan at Elland Road in 2006 and he also worked with Simon Grayson for a short period while United's boss was in charge of Blackpool.

He has scored a total of 33 goals during his last two campaigns, helping Carlisle reach the League One play-off semi-finals at the end of the 2007-08 term, but he is ready for a fresh challenge.

A move for Graham would depend on the position of Beckford, whose future is no closer to being resolved despite substantial interest in him.

Leeds have no intention of selling their top scorer unless rival clubs meet their valuation of a player who has 12 months remaining on his contract.

United, meanwhile, have confirmed that they will clash with Newcastle United during a friendly at St James' Park on Wednesday, July 29.

Leeds are to provide the opposition for Newcastle's only home pre-season fixture, pitting them against a club who were relegated from the Premier League last month.
