LEEDS UNITED: Poyet linked with Watford move

Former Leeds United and Spurs assistant boss Gustavo Poyet has emerged as a candidate to succeed Aidy Boothroyd at Watford - according to reports.

The 40-year-old Uruguayan was sacked last month after a year at White Hart Lane under Juande Ramos, where he oversaw a Carling Cup final win and an alarming loss of league form.

Poyet has joined Chelsea reserve team coach Brendan Rodgers as early contenders for the Vicarage Road hot-seat as Watford seek a quick appointment.

Rodgers has a similar profile to that of Boothroyd - who was appointed by Hornets chairman Graham Simpson after impressing during his interview just three and a half years ago.

The 35-year-old is young and ambitious, having had his playing career with Reading cut short through injury.

Ex-Hornets star Andy Hessenthaler, now in charge at Dover Athletic, and former Brighton boss Dean Wilkins are other names in the frame.
