Leeds United: Mike Newell concedes defeat in battle to sign Warren Feeney
Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell has admitted defeat in his efforts to land Warren Feeney - admitting the Mariners simply couldn't compete with Leeds United's financial muscle once they entered the race to sign him.
Northern Ireland striker Feeney, who Newell worked with during his time as manager at Luton Town, has spoken to the League Two outfit about a move to Blundell Park.
Several other sides, including Huddersfield Town, Charlton Athletic and Norwich City, have also been linked with the 28-year-old, but Leeds look to have won the race for his signature.
Newell said: "I did have a number of conversations with Warren and he was interested in a move here - he was seriously considering it.
"He didn't dismiss it out of hand, but when Leeds showed an interest, it was hard for us to compete with their financial resources.
"Had we been able to get to their level, we would have had a good chance of signing Warren, but ultimately it was difficult for us to match them.
"When a quality player like Warren comes up then you have to try and go for it if you want to be successful."
