Leeds United legend Brendan Ormsby answers your questions.
HI Brendan, do you think we should be cashing in on Ross McCormack given that Middlesbrough are obviously interested – but is £1.3m too low and what do you think about the decision to invite offers for El-Hadji-Diouf?
I think Dioufy is probably the best player we’ve got.
I don’t know if he is on the highest money but he is the most experienced player we’ve got and I think skill-wise he is the best player we’ve got.
But maybe Brian McDermott just doesn’t fancy him and we’ve obviously got to sell people to bring people in. I don’t know if we will sell El-Hadji or let him go on a free or just release him, but I think he’s done well.
When he first came there was all the controversy about what he did in the past but since he’s been at the club he’s done well. He has played in a lot of games and our crowd have taken to him because the opposition hate him, because he does wind them up.
But maybe he is one of the players that Brian needs to get off the wage bill and it could be that if they get rid of Dioufy it will make a bit of leeway to bring someone else in.
With McCormack, I would push it as far as you can go. He’s a good player is Ross but he’s not a great player. He is a good player and even in the position that he is playing at the moment in the diamond shape, when he gets on the ball he is still one of the most creative players. But you think now about some of the overinflated prices in football and you’ve got the likes of Andy Carroll who went to Liverpool for £35 m. I wouldn’t give £35 for him the way he’s been playing.
Torres went for £50m from Liverpool to Chelsea and they are good players but I don’t think for example Carroll is anything special. I think he is just an old-fashioned type of centre-forward and I think Ross, ability wise, is as good as Caroll so I wouldn’t give him away for a million – even for a million and a half. I’d try and get them to pay at least £3m – why not?
He is a good player so why give him away? But I wouldn’t keep Ross at all costs. I don’t think any player is bigger than the club. When we got rid of Eric Cantona years ago everyone thought that was it but Leeds carried on and the club will always be there.
If Middlesbrough came back in with £2m and I thought I could get a player in for the same who can do just as good a job than him then I’d consider selling him.
I just don’t know what Ross is – I don’t know whether he is a striker or a wide man or someone who drops into midfield. I think he would prefer to play up front.
Either way, to replace Ross, Brian would have to use all of the knowledge he has got and hunt around a bit because there aren’t that many great players in these lower divisions that can step up – even from League One.
