Leeds United: Grayson's plea to FA after Tresor Kandol is banned

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson has called for the Football Association to remove what he calls the "grey area" surrounding charges of violent conduct after losing Tresor Kandol to a three-match ban.

United have accepted the penalty meted out to Kandol after the striker was involved in an altercation involving several players at the end of last weekend's 4-0 victory over Yeovil Town, but Grayson criticised the inconsistency which he believes is prevalent in the FA's handling of similar incidents.

The 39-year-old did not defend Kandol but said the FA's failure to charge Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano after the Anfield club's Carling Cup victory at Elland Road in September was an example of the lack of clarity which surrounds offences of violent conduct.

Mascherano appeared to strike Leeds forward Jermaine Beckford with an elbow during the second half of the match on September 22 – an incident shown clearly by television replays – but the Argentinian midfielder was not booked and had no further action taken against him.

Footage of Saturday's game against Yeovil caught Kandol lashing out with an arm as he and a number of other Leeds players became embroiled in a spat with Yeovil striker Sam Williams, seconds after the final whistle. He was cited by the FA after referee Andy Haines failed to spot the offence.

Kandol will miss United's next three matches, starting with tomorrow's FA Cup tie at Oldham Athletic and ending with their League One match against Brighton on November 21.

Grayson said: "The FA asked the referee (Haines) what he would have done had he seen the incident, and he said he would have sent Tres off.

"The inconsistency of it all is frustrating because Mascherano did a similar thing against us a few weeks back and got away with it. It's a grey area – some players seem to get away with it and others are charged."
