Leeds United: Grayson gets cash boost
Leeds United chairman Ken Bates has promised manager Simon Grayson a "fighting fund" from the sale of Fabian Delph and admitted the fee received "won't do any harm" to the club's plans to buy back Thorp Arch.
Bates confirmed that transfer funds would be made available to Grayson after Delph completed his move to Aston Villa for a fee of around 6million.
Villa and Delph reached an agreement over his personal terms yesterday, confirming that the England Under-21 international had played his last game for Leeds, and Grayson has been given immediate flexibility in his search for a satisfactory replacement.
Delph's sale raised the question of how the incoming fee would be used by United's board and the club appear willing to invest a portion of the cash in their playing squad, though Bates admitted that his manager was reluctant to spend money unnecessarily.
The Leeds chairman, 77, was more reticent about Thorp Arch, the training complex which Leeds are aiming to purchase for around 6million by October, but he implied that the fee raised by Delph's transfer would aid that project.
On the subject of transfers, Bates told the YEP: "Simon's been told that he's got a fighting fund if he needs it.
"He might feel the need to add a player or two to his squad now, but when I told him about the money, his first reaction was to say that he wouldn't be spending it just because it was there. It's not often you hear a manager say that."
