Leeds United: FA Cup upsets that stunned football
Leeds United's stunning defeat to Histon yesterday was one of the biggest FA Cup upsets and here are ten more massive cup shocks.
Hereford 2 Newcastle 1 (1972):
Non-league Hereford had already secured a 2-2 draw with top-flight Newcastle before this incredible replay win, thanks to a rocket from Hemsworth's Ronnie Radford and a Ricky George winner in extra-time.
Wrexham 2 Arsenal 1 (1992):
The previous season, Arsenal won the title and Wrexham finished bottom of the Football League. But a superb free-kick from ex Leeds man Mickey Thomas and Steve Watkin last-gasp strike sank the Gunners.
Yeovil 2 Sunderland 1 (1949):
Top-flight Sunderland were humbled by Southern League minnows Yeovil in the fog at Huish Park, Alex Stock scoring the winner,
Sutton 2 Coventry 1 (1989):
Coventry, cup winners in 1987, were brought down to earth by the part-timers, whose scorers were Tony Rains and Matt Hanlan.
Barnsley 1 Chelsea 0 (2008):
Chelsea's starting line-up cost over 115million. But that meant nothing to Barnsley, who pulled off a sensational result, thanks to Kayode Odejayi's header.
Liverpool 1 Barnsley 2 (2008):
This was the moment when Barnsley's incredible cup run exploded into life, courtesy of goals from Steve Foster and a dramatic late winner from Brian Howard.
Colchester 3 Leeds 2 (1971):
Leeds had reached the final a year previously and would lift the trophy 12 months later — but sandwiched between was this fifth-round horror at Layer Road.
Bournemouth 2 Man Utd 0 (1984):
Goals from Milton Graham and Ian Thompson sent the Red Devils crashing out to Harry Redknapp's Cherries.
Sunderland 1 Leeds 0 (1973):
Holders Leeds were hot favourites to retain the cup when they met second division Sunderland in the final, but they reckoned without Ian Porterfield and Jimmy Montgomery.
West Ham 1 Arsenal 0 (1980):
United are the last club to have won the cup while outside the top flight. Trevor Brooking stooped to nod home the Wembley winner.
